This book is based in Cornwall in 1800. The main character in Madeleine Pelligrew, former mistress of Pendenning Hall, who after her husband died was deemed mad and sent away to a mad house for 14 years. In that time she was moved from one mad house to another and her name was changed so she would not be found by family and friends. After 14 years of imprisonment she was on the verge of madness and in very poor health through such bad treatment.
While in the mad house she became close to a young girl, Rowan who she looked upon as a daughter and when she is rescued by a stranger, she insists that Rowen stays with her.
Madeleine believed her husband was killed but by who and why. When she is freed her goal is to find those answers.
As the story unfolds you understand the past is linked with the future. Who can she trust with so many spies and people who want her out of the way, but also old friends who will do anything to help her. All in all a very good read.
