As the first installment in a series this novel is very promising and I sort of regret finishing this book as fast as I did, because now I have to wait for the second book to be released.
Holly Black introduces a troubled young female main character, Jude, and shows her journey through a world where she will never be safe or accepted. Jude is an immensely well rounded character who faces moral issues and has to find the best option in very though situations, often having to sacrifice something that is important to her just to hold on to a feeling of safety and control.
The world created by Black is full of intrigue and hidden dangers as well as magical creatures and amazing forests. The writing style takes a bit, for me a few chapters, of getting used to. But once you're swept up in the plot you won't want to put the book down again until you've finished it.
