where to begin? this book was a whirlwind i was completely unprepared for I LOVED IT SO MUCH.

i’ll admit, i was a little wary when going into this book – i really didn’t know what to expect. holly black’s been a bit of a hit or miss author for: ive loved some of her books whilst loathing the rest. this one was definitely a hit.

the book jumps right into action, years earlier explaining the murder of our main character jude’s parents and how she was whisked away into faerieland because she had no other choice. turns out, she’s gotten used to her surroundings and has been there since.

the story follows jude and her determination to prove others wrong. the people of faerieland are constantly judging her because she’s a mere mortal. jude wants to show to them that she is capable and doesn’t deserve to be treated the way she is.

i loved jude so much. she’s such a smart, strong character who doesn’t need anyone but herself. even though she’s got her flaws, it’s her determination and willingness that makes her so attractive. i can’t wait to see more of her in the rest of the series!

there wasn’t really anything in this book i disliked – from page one i was pulled in and could NOT put the book down it was that good. the writing was beautiful, full of vivid descriptions, making it so easy to fall into the jude’s world, to feel and see what she was seeing.

the characters were all dynamic and easily distinguishable, each with their own strengths and flaws. it was so hard to love just one character and to not pity the villains because they’ve all got something you want to sympathise with them for.

if you love faeries, your fair share of blood and just an all around brilliant novel. READ THIS. this book is wicked and lovely and everything in between.
