I'll preface this first impression by saying I've read a lot of Sam Blake's other novels, and my excitement to see a new release was brought down a tad with the realization this didn't seem to be an continuation of the Cat Connelly stories.

However the cover is suitably dark and murky and quite different to the previous books, which speaks perhaps of a breakaway or standalone story.
It is also a lot darker and edgier seeming.

This change of tone and direction is immediately evident in the first impression, from the get go it is ratcheting up the suspense and the tension, the first few pages hooked me to be honest.

Sam Blake has form with crime and detective novels and this is another that has real potential I think.

My one criticism at this early stage is the number of characters and narratives that are already coming into play, it made the rest of the extract feel quite busy after the initial draw of the opening pages.
