A crime reporter, a female one, sounds like an interesting lead character. The scenes in this first part of the novel are well-painted and diverse. Sam Blake gives internal monologues, moods and feelings as well as the settings complete with placenames, minor characters, sounds and maybe even smells! When a setting is put across so strongly it can be difficult to distinguish what has come from the author and what from the reader's own experience.
