The story is based mostly in Ireland and is told from the viewpoint of our two main characters, Rachel Lambert and Caroline Kelly both of whom are originally from Ireland, but now live and work in London and New York respectively. Due to various incidents in their lives they both find themselves staying at an old house on the coast of Ireland in the depths of winter. The house, Hare's Landing, is in the process of being opened as a hotel by its current owner Bronagh and her husband.
Rachel and Caroline befriend each other and, having discussed why they are both at Hare's Landing and their experiences there, soon realise that they should join forces to find out more about the house and its history.
I really enjoyed this book, however; I felt that sometimes the conversations between Rachel and Caroline didn't feel quite right. Also there were a few parallels or likenesses to Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, which felt a bit lazy; overlooking these things, the story is a decent read.
