This book really gets going from the outset. An accident, a burglary and someone desperately seems to want something hidden.

Rachel’s partner Hunter is knocked off his bike on his way to work. This is on the same day that their house boat is burgled and it looks like a professional job. Hunter is a documentary maker and has beem filming a man called Alex who is street homeless. Alex started to tell Hunter about how he came to be on the streets but now he has also disappeared. Rachel goes to the hostel where she finds that Alex is presumed dead after a fire in his tent and she needs to find out if all the events are accidental or if there is something more sinister afoot.

I galloped through the book it is fast paced and I couldn’t wait to read on to the next chapter. The other main character is Caroline a journalist who has escaped to Hare’s Landing. When she arrives she is met by the formidable Mrs Travers who is the scary housekeeper. Caroline is staying at The Boathouse at Hare’s Landing and is fascinated with it’s history and the story behind Honoria Smyth, it’s previous owner who took her own life. Add in two missing people from the village there is definitely alot of mystery around Hare’s Landing.

I really enjoyed this story, the mystery of the creepy Hare’s Landing. The whiff of perfume that Caroline smells when entering a room, bumps in the night all make it a wonderfully atmospheric read. Reminiscent to Agatha Christie and Daphne Du Maurier who I love.

When Rachel and Caroline meet up they immediately hit it off. Rachel trying to find out what the connection is with Alfie is and with Caroline’s journalistic head they are some delving deeper into the history. The local people do not appear happy with their interest in the area. Caroline finds a letter and strange occurrences start to happen, is someone or something trying to scare them off ?

A fascinating read that kept me engrossed as layer by layer as the mysteries are uncovered, be prepared for some twists and turns which added to my enjoyment of this book.
