A very readable psychological thriller. So refreshing to read a straightforward book that doesn’t keep jumping about in time.
I enjoyed reading Sam Blake’s previous books featuring feisty Dublin detective Cat Connolly immensely so I was a bit disappointed when I realised The Dark Room wasn’t about her - although she did get a mention and her former partner, Malachi, is the investigating officer.
An interesting tale set in a newly renovated country house hotel in County Cork near to a village where everybody knows every body else’s business. Quite a big deal was made of the former owner’s affair and subsequent suicide by hanging but this storyline seemed to just fizzle out without going anywhere. Similarly, there were a few unconvincing attempts to turn this into a ghost story - mysterious violins, perfume scents and white feathers but these didn’t really work for me.
Best character in the book was undoubtedly the dog, Jasper.
Finally - the title. I can’t understand why the book was called The Dark Room as I can’t recall mention of a dark room in the whole story (apart from in passing when some photographs were being processed.)
