I loved this story, as the jumps between the past and the present link so well. I found myself attached to both Phillip and his grandmother, Emma, as the story went on. It opened up a personal side to the story of communism, which isn't something you often see, and shows how to some it was a smart idea, but today's view on how communism is evil is represented through Phillip's viewpoint. As well as feeling that it was easy to relate to these characters, it did a great job of showing how during the war, their was friendships that impacted decisions, that it was not a black-and-white historical fact.
I found myself wanting to know what Phillip went on to do, it was easy to become invested in his story as much as it was to become invested in Emma's, whose story of the past shaped the book, and was emotionally attaching, as he seemed to represent this future that the book had led up to. I'd love a second story based on this, a sequel, of Phillip's stories after this trip.
