The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree is a tale that is incredibly inspiring and empowering, whilst also being sad and heart wrenching. The young protagonist in the story is called Mafalda, who receives the devastating news that she is going to loose her site due to a progressive disease, at just the age of 9.
The story is written in first person, and she learns how to adjust to a life where she is unable to see what is around her. She must accept what is happening to her, even though she is so incredibly young. Though it is written in first person, through the 'eyes' of a child it does not seem overly childish as she has to learn how to deal with her situation and does so in a mature way.
