The Distance Between Me And The Cherry Tree is a saddening yet inspiring story of a young girl named Mafalda. At the age of just nine years old Mafalda and her parents are given the devastating news that Mafalda will lose her sight completely within the next six months due to the rapid progression of a disease named Stargardt.
The story is told through the eyes of Mafalda as she learns to adjust and accept what is happening to her. It is told in a fairly simple and childlike way allowing the reader to feel the various emotions and fears that are going through her head. This story is very much about the bravery of Mafalda being able to let go of what may have been and trusting in herself that she can still achieve goals and make something of her life regardless of the devastating loss of her sight.
Although I think that this is more of a young adult book I did thoroughly enjoy this book and think it offers a great life lesson.
