I was really looking forward to reading this book, especially as it has had comparisons to books such as Caraval. But it couldn't be more different- in a good way! It wasn't set in a magical, fantastical world, but that of the 18th century- where circuses and "freak shows" were a popular choice of somewhat macabre entertainment. (Very much along the lines of The Greatest Showman/P.T. Barnum.) In my opinion, it was refreshing for a YA book not to be fantasy when it easily could have been spun that way.
The characters were all likeable, and diverse! The development of the characters and they're emotions really carried you along in the story and it made it a quick, easy read. The pace was just right- not too quick but not sluggish either- and the mixture of drama and laugh out loud moments made this a great read.
Plus, that cover is beautiful!
