I really enjoyed this book. Based on the historic story of the Pendle witches, Stacey Halls gives us a winding storyline that shows a realistic interpretation of how the events could of unfolded.
Her characters are strong and the book is written in an engaging and cohesive style that encourages you to keep turning the pages.
There is a dark theme that runs through the book that is balanced well with the sensitive relationships between the main female characters.
The only reason I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars is because the ending was just a little too 'easy'. The author has chosen an engaging subject to base her story on and I would have enjoyed more links with folk law and the role of wise women at the time. The book title suggests that the witches' familiars would have a higher profile and I would have enjoyed it more if this had been explored.
