Interesting, but something missing

I thought this was an interesting book, and I generally enjoyed it, but for me there was something missing which stopped me from loving it. I think it might have been that I found Ada quite a cold unlikeable main character, or that there were parts of the book where large chunks of time were glossed over.
The parts of the book which were written in detail were largely enjoyable, although I felt some of the characters in the group in Italy were not very well developed and seemed superfluous to the overall story.
The idea of a girl who feels that she belongs in grander circumstances than the one she finds herself in was interesting, as was how she tried to integrate herself into the group. However, the coldness of her stopped me from fully believing some of it, and enjoying it as much as I wanted to.
