Bess always intended to collect her daughter. However, six years later, when the time arrives, she's told she already has. Someone has taken Bess' child and she wants to know why.

I read it in an evening. As soon as I started it, I was obsessed.

I love historical fiction and have been fascinated by the idea of a foundling hospital since I read Hetty Feather when I was younger.

The writing style was easy to read, and effective at conveying the message.

My heart was in my throat at certain points as I really felt empathy for all the characters involved.

The novel is spilt into four parts, with alternating first person POV between Bess and Alexandra (two parts each and then an epilogue that's Bess' at the end).

Even the end was satisfying - maybe a bit too 'nice' considering the time period and circumstances, but I thought it was really sweet.

My only wish was to learn a bit more about Alexandra, but even that can't change my mind on the rating.
