Starting in the year 1754, we read the story of Bess, the daughter of a fish seller, who becomes pregnant and knowing she canโ€™t afford to keep her daughter she gives her away. She takes Clara to Londonโ€™s Foundling Hospital, where she can place her in their care and one day, when she has saved up, she can come back to reclaim her.
Six years later she goes back to do just that only to find that her daughter has already been claimed, by her!
We follow Bess on her journey to find out what has happened and when she spots a young girl just the right age she acts immediately.
We also hear from Alexandra, a rich young widow who never leaves her house, except for Sundays when she goes to church with her daughter.
I love dual narratives and Stacey Halls first book The Familiars, so I had high hopes for this book and it did not let me down.
Beautifully written and I canโ€™t wait to read Mrs England , her next book. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
