This story follows a woman who gave up her child, due to her financial situation, and hen she went to reclaim her, much later, found that her daughter hadn’t even been in the children’s home for a day - someone else had claimed her first. A fascinating premise.
The book is well written. Not as dramatic as it fist sounds, but enjoyable and interesting none the less. Interesting side characters make it all the more enjoyable, even if the outcome is somewhat predictable. The baby-daddy already had a wife who wants to claim the child upon his death. The mother finds out and disguised herself as a nanny in order to get close to the child. Nothing too new or original, but written in an easy and pleasant style. I’ve read another Stacey Hall’s book (The Familiars) in the past, and would not hesitate to pick up others by her in the future - enjoyable historical fiction.
