We meet two women that have two very different lives but are connected after a event that happened six years before the main events of the story.
Set in 1754 we start by meeting Bess who six years earlier had left her newborn daughter at the foundling hospital. However after working hard to raise the money to get her back she discovers her daughter is gone. We then meet a young widow named Alexandra and their lives become intertwined.
This is the second novel of Stacey Hall and if you have read The Familiars you will not be disappointed as this novel lives up to her exciting first work. A great piece of historical fiction that is an easy read but also full of excitement and drama.
