Impossible to put down, Halls does it again with another fantastic historical fiction that pulls you in to an era (London - 1748) we can't begin to imagine ourselves.

Main character Bess Bright is unable to give her newborn (born out of wedlock - a big no no!) the life she dreams to give, so instead she leaves her at a Foundling Hospital, with the hopes of being able to claim her when she has made a stable life for them to share.

Upon returning to the hospital, Bess' main concern is her daughter having caught a deadly disease and passing before she has the chance to take her home. She doesn't expect to hear that she has already been taken.. by Bess.

We follow the remarkable story of Bess searching for her daughter.

Halls provides an impressive amount of suspense and intrigue, making the book impossible to put down. Beautifully written, you are transported into 1700's London, journeying through the story with Bess.

Highly recommend this book for ANY genre of reader, it's just fantastic. The Familiars is equally as mysteriously brilliant, and I cannot wait to pick up her next book which has recently been released!
