I was looking forward to reading this as I had enjoyed the authors first book, The Familiars and particularly her writing style and strong female leads. This one sounded right up my street.

I really enjoyed reading this book but I have to admit it annoyed me in some places too. Some of the plot development didn't make sense. An example being Alexandra deciding she would never leave the house again as outside was too dangerous, following the death or her husband, which occurred inside the house and of an illness. I found the ending to be a little too neat and happy, it basically ended like a fairy tale. Which in some ways makes it a really lovely, happy read and it certainly leaves you with the warm and fuzzies, but it just didn't really feel at all believable to me with the characters and storyline developing the way they had.
Despite these irks I did enjoy the journey this story followed and the descriptions and history involved. And despite my negatives about the ending the author did tie everything up nicely.
