Not quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it very much

I was expecting more of a tense, psychological thriller when I started reading "The French Girl," and although the pace of the book is fairly slow throughout the majority of the story, I really enjoyed it and read it in a couple of days. The characterisation is well done, with each person being memorable and distinct.

The book is descriptive and well written: without wishing to give anything away, I particularly enjoyed (if that is the right word, under the circumstances) the chapter towards the end of the book where someone turns up unexpectedly on the doorstep. I raced through this part, and awaited the outcome with bated breath.

I struggled a bit with the ghostly presence appearing throughout the story, but understand why she was there, and on the whole I thought this was an excellent debut novel and look forward to more books by Lexie Elliott.
