It would be easy to overlook this as one of many similar titles, but please don't! It is beautifully written and the horror and fear of the blitz is very real. April is a genuinely engaging main character who suffers the loss of her beloved father in the blitz, before falling on her feet with an absolute gem if a landlady as she starts afresh.
However, I think the thing that struck me more than anything was the prejudice faced by a lot of the American soldiers. A lot of novels glamourise them, focussing on the cliches, but this is quite shocking in talking about the racism faced, particularly by AJ; less so by Homer, and the knock on prejudice felt by the girls they loved. Both April and Crawford are lovely characters and well deserve one another. Bring on a sequel !!
