This is a tale about a toxic friendship between our narrator, Ambrosia Wellington (Amb) and a girl who she meets at university, Sloane Sullivan (known as Sully).
It is told over two time periods - now (in the run up to a 10 year reunion) and back when Amb was at university. The chapters alternate between Now and Then, with the Now chapters counting down to the reunion, and the Then chapters following Amb as she starts out on her university life.
We find out early on that something terrible happened, but we don’t know what. The story is well structured, so that we are gradually drip fed facts as time passes.
I don’t think that it is possible to write too much more without ruining the story, so I’ll stop there. However, I will say that the book is a well written study of how dark and toxic some friendships can be, and how trying too hard to fit in isn’t healthy…
