Alternating between two points in time, this book tells the story of the pressures faced when trying to keep up with the world - and the years long, dreadful consequences of doing so.

It took me by surprise in many ways. The characters aren't particularly likeable, but you feel a sense of concern for them when the threats begin, and curiosity over just what did happen all those years ago. It almost made it a better book, not having much love for the characters, as it gave them depth that perhaps wouldn't have been so accessible if they were liked.

The book itself was well written, and managed to take the alternating time points well. This isn't always a technique that benefits a book, but here it worked well.

It was almost like a grown up version of the young adult thrillers I love so much, and for that it definitely have earned its four star rating!
