This book is drama. It’s exactly what I thought it would be and exactly what I wanted to read.

From the first chapter I knew I was here for it. We follow Amb as she joins a prestigious university where she plans to reinvent herself and shed her college-self. She first tried to fit in with the popular kids but her attempts are rejected and she finds what could be called ‘acceptance’ from Sully – a troubled and rebellious teen who loves manipulating and using people just for the fun of it.

Think – classic mean girls. The popular kids, the nerds, the cool kids. That’s the level of character development you can expect, and it’s totally what I was reading it for.

The story mainly revolves around Amb and her relationship with Sully when they were teenagers at university and in the present day. They are both invited to a university reunion and the events that make Amb nervous to go back start to unfold. At points I couldn’t stop reading, I needed to know what horrendous action Sully and Ambs would take – I couldn’t look away!

What makes this story unique is that even though the narrator is the mean-girl and not the victim, she is surprisingly relatable and likeable. She seemed less like a bad girl, and more a girl who had lost her way trying to become the person she thought she should be.

The characters were generally quite cliché which made them really easy to envisage and their predictability and nastiness made for a really indulgent read. The story could have benefitted from a few more twists, but the ones included were great.

I can imagine this story being made into a popular and thrilling movie or Netflix series!

It gets quite dark at some points and be warned that the story deals with themes of bullying and suicide.

A solid 3 stars

You might like it if you liked the movie Cruel Intentions or the book My Dark Vanessa.
