This book is really worth a read. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that this book really changed by perspective of the Holocaust and opened my eyes to the true extent of the diabolical things the Jews suffered. Obviously I know, as everyone does, the facts of what happened, since we're all taught it in school and its a topic that comes up again and again, not just on 27th January (Holocaust memorial day), but theres something about this book that is different, which is what sets it above all other books of its kind. In part, it is its focus on the children in the Warsaw ghetto, with their innocence and purity which still wasn't enough to inspire mercy from the Nazi's - this highlighted to me the true extent of the evil, beyond any comprehension. The book also focuses on three adult figures, the lovers Sophia and Misha, and the doctor that cared for so many Jewish orphans, both before and during the war, with a kind heart and passionate zeal that should be remembered and admired. The book handles the delicacy of the subject brilliantly, while still showing the readers the absolute truth of the monstrous events. Its so carefully researched that for a while you forget that you're reading a book, not listening to a live recounting of a persons life story, and its written in the third person, but not as an outsider sharing a story they've heard, but as though they and you are experiencing it along with the books subjects. Its beautiful, stunning, emotive and heart-breaking, and really is worth a read.
