This beautiful story follows Violinist Anna Sun who unexpectedly receives success from a viral video. However finding herself unable to meet the high expectations set and being burdened with the news that her longtime boyfriend would like a open relationship before making a final commitment. She finds herself burnt out, angry and heart broken. Deciding if he can have an open relationship so can she, embarking upon a bunch of one night stands. She finds that sticking to that plan is quite difficult, particularly when she finds herself falling for for a new love interest. Anna is forced to face challenges from all aspects of her life that threaten to destroy her. Her journey of self discovery is inspiring as she learns to not only fight for herself but for her new relationship. This book does deal with some very sensitive subjects, but the discussion surrounding societal expectations is what really resonated with me. Anna's 'masking' spoke to me personally, and I felt so connected to this book. In her Author's Note, Helen Hoang touches on the initial delay in release date for this book, describing many of Anna's experiences with autism burnout as her own. The knowledge that this book has come directly from the heart made me love it even more. It is obvious that this book is personal, right from the start you just feel so invested in the story. I absolutely adored this book on a personal level.
