The heart principle

The heart principle is the latest In the series by Helen Hoang, I haven’t read any of her other books and didn’t know originally it was part of a trilogy, the story is easy to follow and I think it can be read as a stand alone story as it doesn’t rely on you remembering things from previous books.

Both Anna and Quan are addicts, but not of drugs or alcohol but of trying to be perfect. Anna is a perfectionist when it comes to her violin and trying to be a good perfect person and Quan is addicted to running! They are both stuck in a routine which they cannot break. A routine that makes them repeat the same day over and over. Both miserable and seeking something meaningless they download dating apps and start messaging but it’s purely for sex, nothing more.. until they meet. In this book Therapy is seen as a good thing, highlights the importance to get help when mentally you aren’t feeling yourself, which is great so many people think seeing a therapist means you’re crazy or mental but that’s not true. You go to see a doctor when you’re ill or hurt so why shouldn’t people see a therapist when they don’t feel great in their mind. This book touches on autism, cancer and the importance of self empowerment.

This story is so beautifully written, it flows well and incredibly easy to follow, the chapters are short. The story is split into 2 sections and told by 2 different people Anna and Quan it’s nice to see different perspectives of what is happening one from a female point or view and one from a male.
This is definitely an author I will look for new books by. I really enjoyed the fast paced story with relatable characters.
