The thing that most impressed me about this book was how evocatively 90s it was in its setting and descriptions - tiny bottles of Orangina, fluorescent bracelets, all mixed together to take me back to my childhood and immerse me fully in the story.

I found this thriller to be tense and atmospheric, and a perfectly apt summer read considering the weather.

The book benefits from an unreliable narrator, and without spoiling the plot, the reader can never be truly convinced that what we’re being told is the truth. Even after the story has been unfolded and everything comes to a head, we are still left questioning some things by the end of the novel, especially regarding the central character Sylvie.

The books French setting allowed the whole place a sense of otherness that worked well with the story to further alienate the reader from the characters so we don’t trust them.
