This is a gripping read right from the start! The cover draws you in, sumptuous and rich. It Opens with a gruesome execution of an old physician, hung drawn and quartered. You can smell the blood, descriptions of the horror lifting from the page and you can hear the crowd watching, you are put right in the midst of it. There is a mysterious man in the crowd, once held in high esteem and now brought low by circumstance with thoughts of revenge. But revenge on who?
I was immediately hooked by this story and am keen to know more about this scheme.
Mr Nicolas Shelby, physic to Robert Cecil the Queens spymaster is being questioned by The Earl of Essex about his connection to the executed man. It seems he has some sympathy with him but you can immediately feel the tension here and I need to know more and fast! He is being denounced and arrested for treason.
There is real care and attention to detail, recreating Elizabethan London in your mind. I love the character of Bianca and the descriptions of her remedies she creates, I want to know more about her. They clearly have had adventures before, her and Nicholas but they are planning on rebuilding their future together and hope for a child.
Essex is one of the factions of Elizabethan England with a dark side of intelligencers and int rigue and as Nicholas is brought before his men on what appears to be trumped up charges you know this is going to run on at a pace. I look forward to diving deeper into this adventure!
