I really loved the opening to the book, it set the scene, time and feel to the book perfectly. It was unapologetic in its nature and didn't sugar coat anything about the time and place in which the book is set. The description of both setting and characters are perfect and really conveys the gritty nature of the time and location.
As the book progresses the characters are believable the whole way through. The character of Nicholas is really interesting, and while not having read the other Jackdaw mysteries didn't impact the overal enjoyment of the book, I do wish I had read the others first to fully understand him and his background. That being said the time and pace of the book was good and there was enough tension and suspension to keep you wanting to read more. I will definitely go back and read the rest of the series now based of this one because I enjoyed it so much.
