I love history but rarely read historical novels though it is a genre I’d like to start getting into. The title of the novel is what drew me to read this extract as it is well known as is true throughout history and even today those in power being plotted against is not uncommon. Neither is it uncommon for those seeking to gain more power for themselves, speaking ill and accusing those that they see as competitors or those who they feel have wronged them in some way. More often than not likely accused being innocent.

The brutality within the first few pages is shocking but sadly was a punishment that did occur, serving as a warning for fellow would be traitors. I also am intrigued by the relationship between the Shelby's as there is a deep love there and it would be lovely for a happy ending for them. Medicine in this time is itself interesting considering a-lot of what was used would today be considered toxic or poisonous.
