I haven’t previous read the books that are before this story in the series - however even though I’m sure reading the previous books may add to these characters and to get a background and form a bond or relationship with them, the story line isn’t entirely based on the necessity of reading the previous books - so, if you haven’t read the first 3 like I hadn’t have, you’ll be fine.
I do like the characters, again I think I’d of liked them better by knowing more of their backstory and personality from the previous books. But they are written well.
The plot is good, magic in different centuries is always a good theme for a book to be based upon - it adds a different layer in comparison to other books set in our generations/centuries.
I’d recommend reading, I’m considering going to read the previous books to see what they are like too. The book cover is also nice.
