When I saw the cover of this book, I did not think it would be my usual read. However, once I realised that this was a work of historical fiction, set in the United Kingdom in the year 1954, rather than a work of fantasy my interest was more solidified. The main characters Nicholas and Bianca were well written, and had enough depth for me to be engaged on their adventures.

I have also subsequently been made aware that this is not a standalone novel, but rather the fourth book in a series. It captured my attention enough to make me want to read the other books in the series.

I thought that the description of the books settings and the Elizabethan societal norms had great depth, and it was obvious that a great degree of research had gone into this book prior to writing. I also enjoyed how this book was a perfect mix of adventure, mystery, history and travel.
