The Hiding Place by Amanda Mason is a modern ghost story, and one which instantly caught my attention. Firstly, I was drawn to the cover of the book as it gives little snippets into what's hiding between the pages.... a ballet slipper... a woman behind the barred window......a key ....and a nautical theme of galleon....anchor and bell.... I was intrigued to know more. A young family are on holiday by the sea and the house has a very strange atmosphere to it. The husband is not feeling at ease in the accommodation, but the stepdaughter is spellbound by the secrets that are beginning to unfold. Set in Whitby it's a sinister tale of the old and new that is weaving its complex web and after all what better place to set something like this than the seaside town which provided inspiration for the Gothic horror of Brahm Stoker's Dracula. I've tried not to give spoilers, the book speaks for itself.
