Not really my thing
I struggled to finish this book.
The story is set in Whitby which has associations with Dracula and dark Gothic horror stories. However the discovery of a child’s shoe and some runic markings in the attic and a weird smell in their holiday let didn’t exactly fill me with a sense of dread or a desire to find out what happened next.
This book is probably more appropriate for a reader who has experienced teenage problems or a marital breakdown but I found it difficult to relate to the stepdaughter/stepmother main characters, Nell and Maude. There were several other female characters in the book supposedly connected to Nell’s childhood and schooldays which were spent in Whitby but I found them all rather two dimensional and confusing.
To sum up, not a book for me. Although I enjoy psychological thrillers. I’m not a fan of horror. Unfortunately, this book didn’t really succeed in either genre.
