This is the story of Johnny, a Scotsman who owns an ice factory in Florida with his wife Pauline. From the outside they seem to have the perfect life, but the cracks are showing - Johnny has lost contact with his heroine addicted son back in Scotland, the factory is facing huge fines and possible closure after an accident and Johnny has recently discovered a brain tumour that may or not be cancerous.

This book was a little slow to start but once I was introduced to Johnny's past life in Scotland and the back stories were fleshed out more the story started to come alive. The characters and their relationships with each other all felt very real, everyone had a realistic mix of good and bad traits. Some storylines were a little "forced" but you can overlook these.

I gave this 4 out of 5 stars because I really did enjoy the writing and the story. However, the book could have been pruned a little - it was far too long. The ending for me was a bit too "happy" with all the loose ends tying up a little too neatly.
