This is an action thriller set in Roman times. Unfortunately all the unfamiliar terms and names are explained in the middle of whatever is going on. Thus the scene setting gets in the way of the narrative and makes it an unwieldy read. The characters seemed to belong in a dry history book and had no depth which made it difficult to sympathise with them.
There is a plot to assassinate The Emperor and replace him with one of the conspirators. A lone centurion is made aware of this plot when a group of soldiers disguised as civilians try to kill him. The novel follows his adventures and mishaps throughout twenty four hours as he tries to warn the dissolute ruler who is his friend. If he fails his family will be killed too.
I struggled to finish reading this book and cannot recommend it.
