Two summers, two friends, two communities, one death, many rumours, one narrator. The story zips beween the two summers but with clear labelling. For me, the confusion doesn't come from the two time periods but from the single narrator. Avery isn't always very likeable, maybe because we hear her thoughts and opinions as well as her memories and decisions. She doesn't always come across as a reliable narrator.

Everyone has secrets, many people lie, but Avery seems to conceal things from the reader.

Or maybe I just didn't understand her motivations. Or maybe I missed something. Or maybe she is lying too. The confusion built rather than clearing as more secrets were uncovered until eventually everything was exposed and wounds could begin to heal.

The plot was cleverly constructed and the setting lovingly described. I just wished I could have found a character to warm to.
