First of all, I have to admit I have very mixed feelings about this book. I absolutely did not hate it, but I also didn’t love it. The plot was interesting and the characters were carefully constructed to leave you guessing throughout, which I really enjoy in a thriller. I also really liked the way the story was built up by switching between past and present, however I did find this a tad confusing at times because the setting and characters are the same in both time frames. I do feel this was potentially a reflection of Avery’s conflicting thoughts and impulsive behaviour, which if so is a clever tool chosen by the author to reflect the narrator’s messy personality. For me, the story could have possibly been a little more fast-paced, though it was certainly tense in parts! Overall I definitely enjoyed reading the book but for me it was a little slow and I found the ending to be somewhat anticlimactic. I think I just would have liked more answers at the end about what happened to everybody in the year later, however I did like the little twist which was revealed in the final chapter. I also found myself getting slightly annoyed at the lack of question marks when characters were asking questions.
