I've read a lot of thrillers in my lifetime and I'm always on the look out for something new to pick up. And when I saw that this was an official pick for Reese Witherspoon's book club, I was even more intrigued. And yet, reading the opening for this book, I was struggling to stay connected with it. A friend of the protagonist has died unexpectedly on the beach, transforming the lives of the people she knew. But there's always something deeper than meets the eye.
Obviously, in an initial synopsis you can only give away so much without spoiling something. The writing was interesting yet seemed a little detached from the story as a whole. Despite the first person element, I didn't feel connected to the main character at all. I suspect it's one of those books that takes a while to warm up.
