This is a very original book with a moving and thoughtful story presented in a unique manner. I recommend it highly.

It is most beautifully illustrated using elements of Japanese style. This is a book which really should be read from a paper copy. The origami paper cranes of the title appear everywhere, together with other images of the scenes in the book. The illustrator, Natso Seki, adds immeasurably to Kerry Drewery's prose and poetry. Yes, some parts of the book are in blank verse and these alter the pace and give a dream-like quality.

I wouldn't have thought it possible but I found reading this book to be an experience equally charming and harrowing. It will remain wth me for a long time. The author's note at the beginning finishes with "Fear isn't exclusive to any decade, gender, country or culture. Neither is guilt. Or love. The Last Paper Crane is about all those things."
