This YA book, set at the time of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and 2018 Japan, navigates the relationship between a grandson and his grandfather, who survived the bombing at Hiroshima, written in both prose and poetry. The book does well at exploring themes of grief and you do feel an emotional connection to the characters in the novel. The style of the novel was quite unique and different from things I have read before, as it uses both prose as well as poetry and haiku to tell the story which I think suits the narrative well. Reading this book has made me quite keen to pick up other novels this author has written. Overall, an enjoyable and quick read that I would recommend to others
