The eerie chill of the cover was enough to make me reach for this book. It’s a no nonsense beautifully written book set in a small village in Lapland , the way the writer describes the characters and setting takes you there. This book starts with a hard hitting scene and we soon discover the man at the heart of the story - Vidar. This old man lives with his daughter and grandson and brims with hate. The feeling is mutual from the village, a man known for scheming and tricking people out of their land, there are many that would put a bullet in his head.

As a father he is controlling, emotionally abusive after not moving on from losing his wife years ago. His daughter Liv has contempt for him but no way out.

The story unravels as an old enemy seeks revenge and encourages two wretched brothers to steal from him, but it doesn’t go to plan.

I’ve been waiting for a book this good for a while, completely original and thrilling.
