Throughout the book, I was torn between thinking it was going to be a three or four star review in the end, and I settled on a three largely because I had hoped that the ending would be the redeemer.

I was very excited when I started this book, the first few chapters gave you a glimpse into the characters, painted a wonderful setting for the book and transported you to relevant points in the past. The writing is beautiful, I don’t know if this is the work of the translator and an artistic license or the work of the original author, but I found the imagery and word choice to be just about perfect.

For me, the book was slowly trundling along and at times it seemed as if the storyline would lift, but unfortunately it didn’t. I was left with some questions at the end that I thought would be answered in the book, and it just felt a bit rushed at the end. I liked the characters introduced and overall I did enjoy the story, I just feel that it could have done with a little more editing in the first half when establishing the characters so that more emphasis and direction could have been given to the ending.
