It was always going to be a tall order after the success of her debut novel,'The Silver Road,' but Stina pulls it off with massive quantities of flair and elegance, plunging the reader into an empty village, haunted by people who have yet to exhale their last breath.

This is the kind of novel where you can scent the snow because the climate and nature produce such an atmospheric reading experience. The snow on the ground, and the looming sense of loneliness that it brings, piled onto this family, who are still not well-liked in Odesmark. The clean white beauty of the snowy landscape where Liv lives with her son, Simon, and father Vidar contrasts beautifully with the darkness of the story. And, though its innocence is appealing to the eye, you realize that it will eventually melt, revealing what should not have been kept hidden forever.
