I am not usually a fan of thriller or crime books but this book was so enigmatic that I couldn’t put it down and I devoured the whole book in two days! Vesper is an enchanting author and really engages the reader with her extensive artillery of writing skills! This book is set in California in 1959 when a woman’s place was seen as being in the home. This book presents a view of the Norman Rockwell “American Dream” and shows how it is never attainable, there id often a much darker underside to the seemingly perfection. The Long, Long Afternoon follows the disappearance of Joyce, a suburban housewife, but her children are left terrified and her husband is a prime suspect. This is a terrifying tale of appearances versus reality and the shallowness of perfection. Also, I love the cover of this book, it is so vintage and really fits the overall themes of the book, it really sits well on my bookshelf!
