Inga Vesper opens The Long, Long Afternoon with the line: "Yesterday I kissed my husband for the last time…” and I was hooked directly from this moment. The book have a similar vibe to the popular Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, but set in the 1950s suburban America.

The friendship between Joyce and Ruby, is a complex, interesting, unlikely but real one. From complete opposite ends of the social spectrum, they gravitate towards each other sick of being stuck in the women's place in what is an entirely male dominated society.

The suspense is well paced and the book keeps you guessing as to what happened to Joyce until pretty much the last page. The setting enables the themes of sexism and racism to wrap around a story that would be pretty good by itself, but having the unique 50s lens on top makes this book something anyone would struggle to put down.
