The Lost Lights of St Kilda is another extremely well-written and moving story by the exceptionally talented author Elisabeth Gifford. She has an amazing ability to describe scenes so well the reader could almost be there. This novel starts at the time of the Second World War, 1940 to be exact. It's after the evacuation of Dunkirk when the men left behind were taken prisoner. Fred was captured but managed to escape and get to the coast before sadly being recaptured. He copes with the punishment cells by thinking of his time as a student on Hirta, the main island of St. Kilda. The author then takes us back to 1927, the time when Fred was on Hirta. The description of the island is beautifully written and readers will empathise with Fred for his desire to be back there, a place where he was happy and found love. Back in Britain in 1940 a young girl lives with her mother having moved to the mainland after leaving St. Kilda ten years before. She knows nothing of her father or her early life on the island as her mother hasn't talked about it but, bit by bit, her mother starts to tell her of the life there. This moving story of the horrors of war and the wonder of love will strike a chord with many readers. This novel is not just a remarkable story it is also a very easy to absorb history lesson and essential as a reminder to readers of life last century. Like me, I'm sure readers will be gripped by this story from the first lines, I certainly can't wait to read the rest of this wonderful book.
