I rather liked this book for the first few chapters. And then it really grew on me. And towards the end I slowed down my reading to make the enjoyment last. What a treasure of a book encased in the most beautiful cover!

The descriptions are one of this novel's best features. They don't sit down with their feet under the table in the Victorian style but are frequent, beautifully drawn and very often seen through the eyes of one of the two main characters and so are full of emotion. The sort of descriptive phrases which cause you to remember 'magic moments' in your own life and make you go back and reread them.

Those two main characters are Chrissie, mostly at age twenty, and Fred, thirteen years later. So we see the younger Fred through Chrissie's eyes and see the yearning sense of loss as Fred remembers Chrissie. This is most certainly a love story but definitely not a soppy romance.
